About Ron

Ron CasualRon Erskine is a writer, outdoor photographer, naturalist, and lifelong backcountry wanderer. He has trekked the Himalaya, and backpacked throughout the American West, most often in his beloved Sierra Nevada.

Ron has twice walked the 221-mile John Muir Trail, once with his son, Drew. His Amazon Kindle ebook, Measureless Mountain Days: A Father and Son on the John Muir Trail, is a beautifully illustrated lively journal of a father and his teenage son on a three-week wilderness trek from Yosemite Valley along the crest of the Sierra Nevada to 14,495-foot Mt. Whitney.

Ron’s biweekly outdoor column “Getting Out” appears in three San Francisco Bay Area newspapers. He writes about the trails and natural history of California’s Coast Range, Sierra Nevada, and points beyond. He recently issued a Clouds Rest Challenge and led scores of his readers on a series of preparatory hikes and then led seventy of them on a successful 14-mile climb to the top of Yosemite’s Clouds Rest. Ron has written for Bay Nature magazine and his photography has appeared in the online outdoor photography magazine Extraordinary Vision.

Ron serves on the Board of Directors of the Pine Ridge Association and the Committee for Green Foothills in Palo Alto.

“When I am not outdoors, I am thinking about it. I have the same flatland responsibilities you do, but when time allows, I grab the camera, backpacking equipment, or just supplies for a road trip, and go. I hope my writing and photography will connect people with the natural world and instill a desire to get out and touch the magic that waits there.”
